Frequently asked questions
What is an HSN code?
HSN (Harmonized System of Nomenclature) is the international code system for classifying goods. In GST, the first 2 digits are the chapter, 4 digits the heading, and 6 or 8 digits a more exact product.
What is a SAC code?
SAC (Services Accounting Code) classifies services under GST. SAC codes start with 99 — for example 9983 for professional and technical services or 9988 for job work.
How many digits of HSN should I use?
Businesses with turnover up to ₹5 crore must show at least 4 digits on B2B invoices; above ₹5 crore, at least 6 digits on all invoices. Exporters and importers use 8 digits.
Does this tool tell me the GST rate?
No — rates depend on the exact 6 or 8 digit code and change from time to time (most recently on 22 September 2025). Use this tool to find the right heading, then confirm the current rate on the CBIC website or with your tax advisor.
